The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium and the Association for Career and Technical Education released the following statement in response to the National Governors Association's recent release of its priorities for reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.
The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium and the Association for Career and Technical Education applaud the National Governors Association's focus on and support for Career Technical Education (CTE). This focus, along with the priority that many individual Governors have placed on CTE in their states, reinforces the critical role CTE has in advancing our nation’s educational priorities and ensuring the competitiveness of the United States.
NGA‘s principles share many of the same priorities identified by our organizations, including improved alignment with state economies, a strong state leadership role, increased state flexibility in program administration, accountability measures that better reflect the program’s impact and expected outcomes, and common performance measures, along with an investment in the data systems to accomplish these goals. While we believe the current law’s support of a state’s right to determine which agency or entity governs CTE should be retained, we are supportive of cross-agency collaboration to ensure CTE is a key partner in the state’s education, workforce and economic development priorities. We look forward to working with NGA to craft legislative language that advances the CTE enterprise to ensure increased access to high-quality CTE programs of study.
