Career Clusters Institute

The Institute team is proud to offer Pre Sessions again this year, focused on timely and relevant topics. Pre Sessions are scheduled prior to the National Career Clusters™ Institute, and are charged according to the session. As you register, you have the option of selecting the Pre Session(s) you want, and the charge will be added to the general registration fee.

  • Sign up for special small group targeted training
  • Pre Sessions are available on Sunday, Monday or both days, depending on session
  • Pre session fees are charged in addition to regular Institute fees and may be selected as you complete your registration form

  • Pre Session Title: Introduction to Career Clusters™ and Pathways 101: Using the Updated Implementation Tool Kit

    When: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

    Description: This is the starting place for all things Career Clusters™ for first time attendees or for those who are looking for tools to take back to begin implementing Career Clusters™ in your system, campus or school. Together, we will:

    • Explore the Career Clusters™ Framework and key components
    • Define the benefits of utilizing Career Clusters™
    • Discuss the core tenets of Career Cluster™ implementation
    • Map a strategy for implementing Career Clusters™ in phases
    • Identify the tools and resources available

    This workshop will help you connect all the parts and pieces related to CTE, Perkins, Programs of Study, technical skill assessment, career guidance, workforce development, industry partnership, certification, high school reform, and seamless transitions.

    Use this pre-session to get the most out of your Career Clusters™ Institute attendance.

  • Pre Session Title: Sticky Learning

    When: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

    Description: Learn how to plan and implement integrated learning with action-based inquiry, discovery learning, and real world application. This presentation will give successful models suitable for individual, team, academic, and career and technical applications and supply examples how to actively engaged students in discovering knowledge and skills.

  • Pre Session Title: Increases in US Technical Competence

    When: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 1 p.m.–3 p.m.

    Description: Perkins IV has instituted numerous changes throughout the CTE community, Programs of Study, Clusters, and Assessments just to name a few. Have these changes resonated with the CTE community? Have more states taken on the challenge of technical assessment and if so how are they doing? Every year NOCTI produces a “national report card”, and this year numerous positive trends can be seen. Come hear the good news regarding national technical competence as well as some good news from individual states as well. During this interactive session we will discuss:

    • What the national data on technical skill attainment says;
    • Which states seem to be increasing the technical competence levels of their students;
    • What educators are learning about industry certifications;
    • Is Perkins IV having an impact, and
    • The renewed focus on instructional improvements some states are making using data.

    As part of this presentation we will be giving each participating school a $100 gift certificate for available Programs of Study/Pathway tests to use in the 2012-2013 school year.

  • Pre Session Title: And the Studies Say………….School Counseling and Guidance Programs Do Impact Student Achievement!

    When: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

    Description: Recent state-wide evaluations were completed of School Counseling Programs in 6 states. Results showed that when more fully implemented programs and practices were in place, student results were: significantly higher achievement on NCLB and Perkins accountability measures.

    School Counseling and Guidance Programs do make a difference! This pre-session will focus on the results, from Utah and Nebraska. We will describe strategies, materials and resources helpful to implement these significant factors directly aligned to this conference: Career Clusters/Pathways, CTE Programs of Study, academic & career development curriculum, education and career plans, parent involvement, college and career counseling for all students, statewide career information systems and more!

  • Pre Session Title: Integrating the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and Career Technical Education: A Protocol for Developing Instructional Tasks

    When: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

    Description: As states and districts begin to implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), educators will need to redesign their lessons and classroom activities to ensure that course content is rigorous and aligned to the CCSS. To help teachers and education leaders address this challenge, Achieve and NASDCTEc have joined to pilot a process in which secondary and postsecondary educators develop and evaluate instructional tasks that demonstrate how high school mathematics expectations can integrate with Career Technical Education (CTE) content through rigorous instructional tasks.

    Join this pre-session workshop to gain access to tools and resources that support the instructional task development process and training that supports the use of the tested process. Hear best practice implementation strategies from state leaders and teachers who participated in the process and plan for the opportunity to replicate the process in your states, districts, and schools.

  • Pre Session Title: NRCCTE Jump Start Workshop: Career and Technical Educators Using Data-Driven Improvement (CTEDDI)

    When: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 12:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. AND Monday, June 18, 2012, 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

    Description: In accordance with the goals of Perkins IV, the NRCCTE’s CTEDDI (Career and Technical Educators Using Data-Driven Improvement) professional development is an ongoing process designed to prepare both administrators and career and technical education (CTE) teachers to use assessment data to improve programs and to target individual and group instructional needs in the secondary-level CTE classroom. This pre-session consists of the initial CTEDDI workshop, which is delivered interactively and seeks to improve participants’ knowledge of the use of data, provide them with the tools to transfer that knowledge to the school environment through development of an initial action plan, and enhance their motivation to apply the knowledge to make instructional improvements. An overview of the remaining CTEDDI components, including ongoing support through mentors/coaches and a community of practice for collaboration will also be provided.

    The program is designed for teams, first and foremost.

    Teams: Teams are comprised of two or more CTE teachers from the same or different program areas and an administrator.

    Teachers: Individual teachers will also be accepted who have the intent of learning the information to take back to the school for planning team participation later.

    Directors and administrators: We welcome and highly recommend that a CTE director or state administrator attend, preferably with the teacher teams, to get a complete view of the model, especially if considering statewide implementation of the CTEDDI model.

  • Pre Session Title: Positioning HS Marketing and Business Programs for the 21st Century: Meeting the Needs of the Post-Millennial Student

    Description: Build a stronger, in-demand Marketing and Business Administration program via industry-validated, contemporary curricula that meet Perkins requirements within the context of the States’ Career Clusters™ initiative.     This highly interactive workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the national Business Administration curriculum model, varied non-text resources for teaching, and 21st Century learning strategies for the post-millennial student and for immediate application in your classroom.

  • Pre Session Title: Everything you Need to Know about "Real" Academies

    When: Monday, June 18, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

    Description: Career Academies have becomea major school reform effort - with interest from not only educators, but also business partners and legislators. The term "Academy" is being used to describe many programs. But - what is a "real" Academy/ What are the elements that make this model so different and so successful? In this session participants will learn about:

    • The components of a "real" Academy
    • The National Standards of Practice for Career Academies
    • Successful practices to implement and sustain Academies

    This session will be itneractive with time for discussion and questions. Participants will have materials to take back to their schools, districts, and communities and information necessary in implementing a model Career Academy.

  • Pre Session Title: Ingredients of the Perfect Test

    When: Monday, June 18, 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

    Description: Learn more about the assessment development process from start to finish! The process involves consideration of content, format, and the context in which the test will be used. Learn the correct way to write multiple choice items and how to develop properly constructed jobs for performance assessments. Validity and reliability will be clearly defined and during the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups to review and create properly constructed multiple-choice items and performance jobs. As part of this presentation we will be giving each participating school a $150 gift certificate for available pathway tests to use in the 2012-2013 school year.

  • Pre Session Title: STEM for All: Integrating STEM across the Clusters

    When: Monday, June 18, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

    Description: STEM is everywhere! Some of the fastest growing jobs require STEM skills that go beyond science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Explore STEM disciplines and how they function beyond the classroom and across the clusters.

    Participants attending this pre session workshop will receive professional development to help all students recognize that real world problems are sometimes complex and solutions to these problems require knowledge and skills from more than one discipline. During this session participants will work with projects from the nine focus areas in the STEM–IT-UP, American Careers program. These STEM focus areas include Business, Communications, Consumer Issues, Cybersecurity, Engineering, The Environment, Health, Innovations and Manufacturing. In addition, participants will receive a voucher to submit for the balance of this 60-lesson program aligned with standards, valued at $219.00.

  • Pre Session Title: Programs of Study: Nationally Designed Framework and Self-Assessment Tool

    When: Monday, June 18, 2012, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

    Description: The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act calls for states to offer career and technical programs of study. To help states and local recipients meet these requirements and ensure better consistency across the nation, the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), in collaboration with major national associations, organizations, and states, have formulated a “career and technical programs of study design framework.” During this session, these components will be discussed allowing participants to have an opportunity to compare and contrast their programs of study with this national model.

    A comprehensive overview will also be provided of the “Programs of Study: Implementation Readiness and Capacity Self-Assessment” tool utilized by the RPOS States. Information will be shared as how to follow the project. Resources will also be provided for states and locals to build from the successes of the project for their own RPOS development and implementation.

  • Pre Session Seminar Title: Advocacy Approaches: Getting the Most out of Connecting with Congress - Hosted by NASDCTEc

    When: Monday, June 18, 2012, 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.

    Description: While many use the terms “lobbying” and “advocating” interchangeably, there is a difference. So, even if your state prohibits you from lobbying, there are still things you can do to bring attention to the importance of CTE at a time when it is needed more than ever.

    Join NASDCTEc’s Public Policy Manager as she walks you through how to be an effective advocate for Perkins and CTE. This seminar is designed to provide the “ins and outs” of advocating and working with Members of Congress to achieve your goals. You will learn how to best inform lawmakers about the value of your programs and how to be a resource for Congressional staff.

    Tips and tools will be provided in this fast paced and informative session that is focused on new and time tested advocacy approaches. All levels of people are welcome to attend this exciting session.
