NASDCTEc 2009-2010 Officers Begin Terms Today

Washington, D.C. (July 1, 2009) — Officers of the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium begin their one-year term today. The officers enlist at a key time for education, which has received significant attention and historical investment amid new standards and expectations set by the recent White House administration.

The elected officers are charged with representing state and territorial agency heads of career technical education and providing leadership for career technical education’s role in education, postsecondary readiness and economic development. Their roles require guidance for the States’ Career Clusters Initiative and leadership in underscoring the value of career and technical education for the nation.

Joining President June Sanford, the Connecticut State Director of Career and Technical education, on the Executive Committee are: Vice President Phil Berkenbile was named state director of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education; Secretary/Treasurer Patrick Ainsworth, the California Assistant Superintendent and Director of the Secondary, Postsecondary, and Adult Leadership Division.; and immediate Past President Jean C. Stevens, Associate Commissioner, Office of Curriculum and Instructional Support, New York State Education Department.

President: June Sanford — Mrs. Sanford serves as Perkins Program Manager for the administration of secondary and postsecondary funds for the Connecticut State Department of Education in the Bureau of Curriculum and Instruction. She is responsible for career and technical education data reporting and accountability as well as the oversight of program compliance. Further, Mrs. Sanford works in partnership with the Department of Labor and Economic Development, the community college system and the Connecticut Business and Industry Association as part of an integrated plan for pathway development in workforce preparation.

Vice President: Phil Berkenbile – A former agricultural education instructor, Mr. Berkenbile serves on the Governor’s Taskforce on Aerospace and Information Security, the Governor’s Taskforce on Healthcare, the Oklahoma Manufacturers Alliance Board, the State Insurance Advisory Council, and the State Workforce Development Board. Mr. Berkenbile also serves on the CareerTech Administrative Council and is a member of the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technology Education.

Secretary/Treasurer: Patrick Ainsworth – As Assistant Superintendent and Director of the Secondary, Postsecondary, and Adult Leadership Division, Mr. Ainsworth oversees secondary education, alternative education, adult education, college preparation and postsecondary relations, career and technical education, and workforce preparation programs. He also serves as the Superintendent’s Designee on the California Workforce Investment Board, Joint Boards Advisory Committee, Community College Economic Development Policy Advisory Council, and other groups.

Past President: Jean C. Stevens – Mrs. Stevens provides leadership and oversight of all curriculum areas, Summer Institutes in the Arts, middle level education curriculum, Math and Science Partnerships (NCLB Title II B), Enhancing Education through Technology (NCLB Title II D), best practices and the development and management of the content for the Virtual Learning System the NYSED web portal. She is responsible for leadership and management oversight, including policy and program development for Adult Education, Adult and Secondary Career and Technical Education.
Founded in 1920, the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium is the Washington DC-based professional society of the state and territory agency heads responsible for career technical education. The state directors are committed to leadership and results. The association has a growing membership of over 200 members who share the State Directors’ commitment to quality education at the secondary, post secondary and adult levels.
